Newnham House Family Day:

Exchange Report

Every year the Form 3 group is lucky enough to have the opportunity to apply to be part of the Exchange Programme. It is a long, nerve-racking process that allows much learning to take place.

This year a number of Newnham boys  applied :

The Form Three boys who went through the Exchange process

In order to have a chance of being selected one had to go through the numerous steps of the process. It began with an essay which was written to indicate that you were interested in the programme and to give a little background information about yourself, always remaining relatively modest of course.

All those who applied and wrote essays were then split into different groups for interviews in which you were asked about yourself and your general knowledge was also tested.

At this point the number of boys was reduced before moving into the second round of interviews in which similar questions were asked. Both sets of interviews were done by members of the Exchange Committee and one never got the same interviewer twice.

After the second round of interviews 18 boys were selected to attend the Final Dinner which took place at the Fleur-de-Lys Club. Five of the Exchange Committee attended and the night was full of non-stop conversation, much laughter, delicious food and impromptu speeches done by all the boys.

The following week they announced the ten boys that would embark to their various schools in the third and fourth term of Form 3 and the first term of Form 4.

Newnham did exceptionally well to get Jarryd Wernars, Craig Goldswain and Tiaan Slabbert through to the final round. After much hard work and anxiety Craig and Tiaan were eventually selected to go to Gordonstoun in Scotland and Charlotte Latin School in America respectively. We congratulate them and all those whose participated in the process. It was a great learning curve for us all and, I’m sure everyone can agree a worthwhile experience.
