End of Term 2

The second term is always a very busy time for the boys. Their winter sports programme is very demanding and with the added pressures of their school work many of the boys, particularly the seniors, have found themselves stretched to meet academic deadlines as well as honouring their sporting and other extra-mural commitments.

Gareth Grant and Andrew Wishart both played major roles in the school production of ‘Grease’ which was staged in the early part of the term. Devin Botha and Craig Saunders both attended Midlands U18 rugby trials and Craig made it through to the final KZN trials. Tom Abendanon did well in the U 16 age group where he was selected for the Midlands Rugby Team. In hockey, special congratulations to Nick Spooner and Ross Chaplin who were both selected for the Midlands U18A team which will participate in the Inter-provincial Tournament held in the July holidays. Guy Drake and Haydn Corke were selected for the Midlands U16B hockey team. Whilst it is important to acknowledge the boys who have excelled I also commend all the others who have played in the various age group teams for their commitment.  I am sure they have enjoyed the season and many of the teams have done exceptionally well.

Glen McKnight and Mark Barocas both had their Matric Art work displayed at the Tatham Gallery which is a tremendous achievement and David Ferronha won 1st prize in a recent Royal Society Science essay writing competition. A number of boys have also gone through to the 2nd round of the various subject Olympiads.

This is the first year for some time that there have been no June Examinations. The Industry Order has, however, revealed a number of excellent results and by and large there has been an improvement from the 1st term, although certain individuals will no doubt be disappointed in their marks and symbols. Next term represents an opportunity for a fresh start and it is important that they take advantage of this.

The House is in the process of being painted and I apologize for the fact that they boys have had to clear out their dormitories and studies but they will return to a much brighter Newnham. I have emphasized to the boys the need to take greater responsibility for condition of the House and to reduce unnecessary damage cause by careless behaviour.

I am concerned at the moment by the amount of clothing that is left lying around the House unmarked. It is very difficult for us to get this back to its rightful owners if it does not have a name on it.

The Newnham Golf day takes place on the second Sunday of the 3rd term. Nick Holtzhauzen has sent out emails in this regard. We would appreciate as much support for this as possible as it is for a very good cause.

The Matric leaders will be rotated in the various dormitories and portfolios at the start of the 3rd term. The leadership team has done well thus far and a change of personnel in the various areas will be refreshing. I thank the Matrics for the work that they have done in running the House thus far and I look forward to their continued support.

I am sure that you will enjoy having your sons home for a few weeks and I trust that they will return well rested and ready for the new term. A final request is for you to assist by ensuring that your sons return to school having had a ‘school’ haircut. It enables him to start the new term on a good note without the distraction of having to visit the school hairdresser.

Regards
